It acquired the Commercial Bank of Australia in 1981 and adopted the name Westpac, a portmanteau of 'Western' and 'Pacific', in 1982. Headquartered at Westpac Place in Sydney, it serves around 13 million customers and employs roughly 35,000 people, offering deposit, lending, transaction and trade services.
